Why Eat a Healthy Breakfast

I‘m no mechanic but I know what my car needs to maximize its performance. Routine oil changes, tune ups, and using the right gasoline are some of the things that will help my car survive for years to come. And like my car, I make sure I fuel my body with the proper nutrition so I perform at a peak level mentally and physically with a healthy breakfast.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day but many people either do not eat breakfast or eat the wrong foods.

Think about your car for a second. If every morning you start your car with no fuel how do you think your car will do? Well think of your body as a vehicle that needs fuel every morning. Breakfast is the meal that most likely will influence how you feel for most your day. If chosen correctly, the foods you eat for breakfast will give you the nutrients that will help support the energy level needed throughout your day. So do you want to feel like a car that putters along that can stall at any second or do you want to feel like a Formula One race car? It all depends on what you eat for breakfast.

Breakfast and Body Weight
Many studies have shown that breakfast eaters tend to weigh less than those who skip breakfast no matter who you are. There is a strong correlation between body weight and breakfast eaters/skippers in both adults and children. 

For instance, studies show that people who skip breakfast are to unlikely consume their daily need of nutrients that most healthy breakfasts offer. In other words, eat a bunch of junk food that is terrible for you. In addition, this will cause you to snack improperly since you will probably be hungry well before lunchtime arrives. This can also screw with your metabolism and lower it since you didn’t give your body with the proper fuel it needs to help burn fat. Many people think that not eating breakfast will help them lose weight due to those calories lost but it does the complete opposite in most cases.

Choosing the Right Breakfast Food

Selecting the proper foods for breakfast is as important as eating it so that means doughnuts and other junk food are off-limits if you want to keep your body in its best condition. There are many excellent foods you can eat for breakfast whether you are in a rush or you have time to prepare meals. A variety of fruits, veggies, protein, and dairy is your best choices when it comes to that morning meal. Here are some healthy and speedy choices from Medicinenet.com that are excellent choices to start your day.

  • A whole-wheat English muffin with low-fat cheese, a scrambled egg, and slice of tomato or lean ham
  • Smoothie made with fruit and low-fat yogurt
  • Salmon on 1/2 whole-grain bagel with light cream cheese
  • Whole-grain cereal with fresh fruit and low-fat milk
  • Oatmeal made with skim milk, raisins and nuts, with 4 ounces of orange juice
  • Low-fat yogurt and a piece of fresh fruit
  • Yogurt smoothie and breakfast bar
  • Hard-boiled egg and a banana
  • A veggie omelet and a piece of whole-wheat toast

 

I Have No Time For Breakfast… Liar!

You may need to change your routine to make sure you eat a daily breakfast. Below are some ways you can make sure breakfast is not missed.

  • Set Your Alarm Clock at least 20 minutes early so you can prepare and enjoy your breakfast. Depending on what you prepare you may need more time. Go to bed earlier if you need to. No excuses.
  • Not eating after 7 will give you some form of an appetite in most cases. That way breakfast will sound more appealing to a hungrier you.
  • Preparing your meals the night before eliminates the preparation time early in the morning.

These are just a few suggestions. You must be flexible so you can make sure breakfast is a morning ritual.

In conclusion, breakfast is the fuel for your engine. Your body weight and overall health is greatly influenced based on if you eat breakfast or what you eat. You have more focus and it helps you sustain energy for the daily grind ahead of you. Things happen and eating breakfast soon as you awake may not happen but make sure you shove something down your throat in the morning. Remember, think about your car and imagine it with no fuel so make sure you fill your tank with a balanced  breakfast so performance is not an issue throughout your day.
